Japanese Educational
System |
The Japanese educational
system is based on school attendance of 6 years in elementary
school, 3 years in junior high school, 3 years in senior high
school and 4 years in university. In this system the 9 years
of elementary and junior high school education are mandatory.
After graduation from junior high school, those who wish may
continue on to senior high school and university. The school
year begins in April and continues to the following March. |

Nursery Schools |
Nursery schools are provided as juvenile
services under the Juvenile Welfare Law to provide child care
and education to preschool children who cannot receive sufficient
attention at home due to their guardian's work, illness, pregnancy
or such. Nursery School hours are from 7:30 to 19:00, with hours
varying according to each nursery school. Registration starts
around November for all schools. To start during the middle
of the school year, register with the Juvenile Affairs Office
to see whether seating is available. |
Kindergartens |
Kindergartens are provided under
the supervision of the Ministry of Education for the education
of preschool children from the age of three. Fees vary according
to each kindergarten. Class hours are, as a rule, weekdays
from 9:00 to 14:00 and Saturdays from 9:00 to 12:00. Each
kindergarten may be different. Entrance procedures are handled
at each kindergarten.

Elementary and Junior High Schools |
School admission fees and text book
charges are free. Also, all schools serve a school lunch and
there is a mandatory school lunch fee. Foreign citizens from
6 years old to 15 years old are not required to enter school,
but it is available for those who wish. Bring your Alien Registration
Card to register at the Education Office. |
