Foreign people who have
lived in Japan for more than 90 days need to register as foreign citizens.
【Initial Registration:
first entry or newborn baby】
Alien registration
cards will be issued to registered people. (It takes about a month for those
who are 16 years old or over.)
★Required Items: Passport (If you
have one) and two signed photos (taken within 6 months, with no hat, no
scenery, 4.5cm high × 3.5cm wide, Photos are not required for those
under 16 years old.)
【Registering a Change e.g. move to Toyokawa, change of address, change
of period of stay】
If your registered
personal details change,
report the
change within 14 days in person or through a family member if you are living
together. This can’t be done by *third parties regardless of a proxy.
If the change
can’t be written on the back of the registration card because its space
is full, you have to renew the card. Bring your registration card, passport
and 2 photos (taken within 6 months, with no hat, no scenery, 4.5cm high
× 3.5cm wide).
★Required Items: Alien registration
card and any documents that show the change such as passport, etc
【Renewal: expiration】
You
must apply to renew your Alien Registration during the period written on your
card. After your registration has been confirmed your card will be issued.
★Required Items: Passport (If you

scenery, 4.5cm high × 3.5cm wide, Photos are not required for those

【Lost Cards】
If you lose your card, report the loss
to the police. Then, apply for a new card.

have one), the number which you will get when you report your lost alien
registration card to the police and two signed photos (taken within 6 months,
with no hat, no scenery, 4.5cm high × 3.5cm wide, Photos are not
required for those under 16 years old.)
【Certificate】
The
document verifying your alien registration is called “certificate of
alien registration”. (It costs 200yen per document to issue.) If family
members who are not living with you or third parties apply in your place, you
must sign a proxy granting them permission to do so.
