Marriage and Divorce Procedure

Marriage

Required Items

Certificate of nationality or passport

Certificate of legal capacity to enter into marriage

Marriage registration form

Bring these to the Citizens Affairs Division. After submitting the documents, bring the certificate of acceptance of marriage to your embassy or consulate.

Divorce

When both parties are foreign residents, divorce procedures are done according to their principle laws. Ask your embassy for details on how to go about it. If one of the parties is Japanese and both parties are in agreement, the divorce procedures are carried out under Japanese law. Foreign residents may also need to go through different procedures with their consulate.

Death

The death of a foreign resident should be reported to the citizens’ affairs division. You will need to submit a death certificate. The deceased’s Alien registration card and national health insurance card should also be returned. You need to report the incident to the deceased’s consulate, too.
