Automobile tax

Automobile tax is compulsory for those who possess automobiles. Those who possess automobiles on April 1st. are liable. Automobile tax is calculated depending on the type of car that you own. Payment slips are sent from the prefectural tax office in May. Pay the tax with the slip at banks, post offices or convenience stores.

Light automobile tax

Those who possess light automobiles or motorbikes on April 1st. are charged light automobile tax. Payment slips are sent from the asset tax division of Toyokawa city in May*. Pay the tax with the slip at financial institutions that accept payment slips of municipal taxes such as the Japan Post Bank in Aichi, Gifu, Mie and Shizuoka and designated convenience stores.

NOTE

Automobile tax and Light automobile tax are imposed on named owners. When you dispose of or sell your car, you must change your car registration or deregister it. If you miss the procedure, the taxes are imposed on you regardless of whether you still have the car or not.

If your car is stolen or lost, report the incident to the police. The police will issue you with documentation recording the incident. Then, take the police documents to your nearest prefectural tax office. The nearest is the East Mikawa Prefectural Office (Toyohashi-shi Hacchodouri 5-4). In cases of light automobiles, report the incident to the police and to the nearest Light Motor Vehicle Inspection Organization. The nearest is the Toyohashi Branch (Toyohashi-shi Jinnoshinden-cho Kyonowari 18). *Take the documents to the Municipal Tax Division

Other

If you fail to pay taxes, you will be forced to pay punitive charges. The longer you fail to make payments, the higher the fine will be. In severe cases, properties such as deposits, land, house, cars, etc will be forcibly seized.
