Public Pension Scheme
Everyone living in Japan between 20 and 60 years of age including students and foreign residents are required to enroll in the national pension program regardless of nationality. The National Pension provides an income for the elderly, widowers and in some cases the disabled and aims to sustain those people financially.
The premium per month is 14,410 yen. The prmium gradually goes up until 2017. Employeefs Pension schemes are designed to raise the level of benefit above that of the National Pension. As in the case of Social Health Insurance, The employer and the subscriber each pay half of the premium. The premium includes National Pension payments.
The Public Pension is not always nonrefundable. You can receive a lump-sum withdrawal payment when you go back to your country. Get the application form at your nearest Social Insurance Office before leaving Japan and send it to the Social Insurance Operation Office within two years of returning home. The required items are below.
1. Pension Handbook or basic pension number notice
2. Photocopy of the pages in your passport indicating the date of leaving Japan
3. Documents stating a desired bank account number, to which the lump sum payment will be sent.
People who are 65 or over and have paid the premiums for a minimum of 25 years are eligible to receive the pension. (There are some exceptions depending on date of birth.) Payments of the old-age pension can be increased if you join additional pension schemes or the national pension fund.
People who have been paying the premium and have become disabled and are restricted in daily life are eligible to receive the Disability Pension. People who are disabled and are restricted in daily life and aged between 60 and 65 are also eligible to receive payments.
